Contemporary Weight Loss Programs

 
  • The advertised results of weight-loss without diet and exercise should be very suspicious.  To lose weight and maintaining a healthy weight it is a lifestyle change that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the number of calories (Alakkam, 2013).

  • The guidelines that play in helping Americans maintain a healthy body weight is Dietary Guidelines for Americans from HHS’s Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.  This dietary guidelines design for Americans age two and over to maintain healthy weight buy eating healthy and nutritional diets and be active (Dietary Guidelance, 2013).
Short Term:
  • Benzphetamine- appetite suppressant (Schlenker, 2011); risks- can harm an unborn baby, pulmonary hypertension, and may impair your thinking (Benzphetamine Side Effects, 2013)
  • Diethylpropion- appetite suppressant; risks- anxiety, change in sex drive, dizziness, general body discomfort, hair loss, and headache (Diethylpropion Side Effects, 2013).  
  • Phendimetrazine- appetite suppressant; risks- may cause blurred vision or impair your thinking or reactions, and can harm an unborn baby (Phendimetrazine Side Effects, 2013). 
  • Phentermine- appetite suppressant; risks- seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there, severe mental changes (Phentermine Side Effects, 2013).    

          Long Term:

  •  Orlistat- blocks fat from being absorbed in intestine (Schlenker, 2011); risks- bladder pain, body aches, chills, difficulty with breathing, headache, trouble sleeping, unusual tiredness or weakness, and vomiting (Orlistat Side Effects, 2013).
  • Sibutramine- affects chemicals in the brain that influence weight maintenance and was withdrawn from the U.S. market in October 2010 (Sibutramine, 2013).
